Position Summary:

Major Duties and Responsibilities: • The primary responsibility will be the installation, operation, administration, and maintenance of automation and instrumentation equipment. • Provide automation support of Biotech manufacturing in a GMP environment, including multiple manufacturing process automation systems in MedImmune’s Gaithersburg Clinical Manufacturing sites. • Support automation system installations and modifications; including writing specifications and automation SOPs, programming, testing, and automation system maintenance. • The job will require the support of biotech manufacturing equipment, include: cell culture bioreactors, bacterial fermentors, chromatography systems, filtration skids, centrifuges, process tanks, buffer/media preparation equipment, glass washers, autoclaves, CIP/SIP systems, etc. • Troubleshoot process equipment and automation problems, make repairs, engineer solutions to recurring problems, support process optimization projects, manage projects, and perform periodic maintenance as required. • Perform server backups and ensure data recoverability. • Support the administration and use of OSI PI. • Assist in the training of manufacturing personnel, maintenance technicians, and other engineers in the operation, maintenance, trouble shooting, and programming of automation systems. • On call support will be required, and overtime as needed. • Execute GMP change control; own CAPAs, and support deviation investigations as required. Special Skills/Abilities: • Allen Bradley PLC systems and Rockwell software • RSView SCADA systems • HMIs, Digital Electronic Displays, and Instrumentation • Programming PLC ladder logic and PID control loops • Data Historian programming and maintenance • Ethernet networks and server maintenance • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Good interpersonal communication skills • Experience with Contrologix PLCs, Device Net, Factory Talk, and MS-SQL would be preferred • Experience with OSI PI data historian would be preferred • Project management experience would be preferred.

Job Complexity: Work on assignments that are complex in nature where considerable judgment and initiative are required in trouble shooting, making repairs, resolving problems, and making recommendations.

Supervision: Works with minimal supervision and a high degree of independence. Perform routine work with minimal instruction and new assignments with general instruction Requirements/Qualifications:

Education: B.S. in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering is preferred, and required for Automation Engineer II. Others will be considered with sufficient relevant experience. A control systems certification is desirable. Formal training in computerized system validation, GAMP, and CFR 21 part 11 would be preferred.

Experience: Automation Engineer – A college degree plus a minimum of four years of job related automation experience, with at least two years of experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing environment. Automation Engineer II – A B.S. in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering plus a minimum of seven years of automation experience, with at least four years of GMP experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech manufacturing environment. Experience with computerized system validation, GAMP, CFR 21 part 11, ISA-88 Batch Process Control, and, ISA S-95 Manufacturing Enterprise Systems is preferred.
