DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION The Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) Engineering Department is a group of engineers, materials scientists, and technologists who are responsible for designing and maintaining gas transfer systems for national-security programs. Our work has three major components: scientific research, advanced component development, and engineering support for existing systems. Responsibilities include designing explosively actuated components and high-pressure gas reservoirs, developing welding technologies, and investigating the effects of hydrogen isotopes in various materials. The department operates a high-pressure testing facility and a welding/brazing facility. Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups; Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Los Alamos National Laboratory; production agencies located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas; the National Nuclear Security Agency; and the Department of Defense.

JOB DESCRIPTION Sandia/California’s Gas Transfer Systems Engineering Department is seeking a motivated and innovative individual to join our team as a mechanical engineer. The candidate must have strong communication skills and must be able to interact with a variety of partners and customers. The candidate should have strong engineering skills that can be applied to a broad spectrum of problems, including mechanical design, computational analysis, materials studies, and high-pressure experiments.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS This position requires an advanced degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Other required qualifications include leadership and project management skills; organizational and critical-thinking skills; and strong written- and verbal-communication skills, including the abilities to develop and deliver presentations and create scientific/engineering documentation.

Desired qualifications for this position include experience in the following areas: metallurgy and/or materials science, experimental and computational compressible fluid flow, mechanical design, and welding technologies.

Candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. Department of Energy security clearance for this position. To obtain a security clearance, U.S. citizenship is required.
