Job Description
Sandia National Laboratories is the nation’s premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation. We are a world-class team of scientists, engineers, technologists, postdocs, and visiting researchers—all focused on cutting-edge technology, ranging from homeland defense, global security, biotechnology, and environmental preservation to energy and combustion research, computer security, and nuclear defense. To learn more, visit http://ca.sandia.gov/casite/.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION Sandia/California’s Handling Gear and Joint Test Assembly (JTA) Department develops and supports advanced electronic and mechanical subsystems to support the Nuclear Weapons Program. Our group is responsible for handling gear, test gear, and weapon container development; certification; and stockpile support for all weapons in the nuclear stockpile. These responsibilities include ensuring that every weapon and weapon subsystem is managed, lifted, and transported in a safe and secure manner according to recognized standards. Our group is also responsible for JTAs, which are instrumented weapon configurations for flight tests jointly sponsored by the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. These tests are used to confirm the performance of nuclear weapon systems in realistic flight environments. Such testing is critical to Sandia’s stockpile stewardship mission.

JOB DESCRIPTION We seek a mechanical engineer to join a multidisciplinary team that is designing and developing advanced components, subsystems, and systems for national-defense programs, homeland security, and nondefense applications. These engineering teams employ state-of-the-art technologies, including sophisticated software tools for design, analysis, modeling, and simulation. Responsibilities for mechanical engineers include conceptual design, detailed design, analysis, overseeing fabrication, defining and executing qualification/testing plans, field support, and project management. Mechanical engineers work with a wide variety of technical staff members, such as electrical engineers, designers, analysts, materials scientists, fabrication specialists, test personnel, program managers, and project managers. Successful candidates will work in a team environment and will have opportunities to acquire increasing levels of responsibility.
